The initial list is from the Miami Herald, November 20th, 07 entitled Second Life Lingo. However we shall be adding to this list and we shall call this section the Slictionary. This symbol * indicates that the definition is from the Miami Herald.

  • Avatar: A digital representation of a person having the ability to run, jump, fly, chat, instant-message and more with others they meet.*
  • Furries: Avatars in the form of furry creatures.*
  • Griefers: A griefer is a slang term used to describe a player in an multiplayer video game who plays the game simply to cause grief to other players through harassment. [wikipedia]
  • Griefing is the noun form used to refer to a griefer's activity.[wikipedia]
  • HUD: stands for heads up display. You usually wear a hud to perform certain actions.
  • Islands: Places avatars visit, bought and designed by individuals and organizations.*
  • Inventory: a folder you have when you log in to Second Lifewhich includes all the stuff you bought.
  • In-world: As opposed to the real, physical world outside of Second Life.*
  • Linden dollar (L$): Second Life's virtual currency, which can be exchanged for U.S. dollars.*
  • Lindex: Second Life's currency exchange.*
  • Orientation Island: Good first stop where Second Life newbies can learn the basics.*
  • Parcels: a land with specified square feet. A parcel to an island is like an apartment in a building.
  • Prim: short for primitive - an object or basic shape in second life such as a cone or a cylinder or a cube etc.. You are permitted a certain number of prims or objects on a land you own.
  • Resident: Those with an active presence in Second Life.*
  • RL: real world
  • Skin: you can buy skins or find free skins which usually include the skin color and the lipstick color and eyebrow color as well as nails and nail polish color.
  • SIM: an entire region in Second Life which is usually divided into Islands or parcels
  • SL: Second Life.*
  • SLURL:a second life url that allows you to teleport from your website to the location in-world directly.
  • Teleport (or TP): How avatars move instantly from spot to spot.*
  • Terraforming: creating the type and shape of land you want [eg. desert or mountainous or grassland etc]
  • Texture: an image of a texture usually created in a photo-editing software which you upload to Second Life [or find for free or buy in Second Life] to give your objects texture. Eg. brick or fabric or silk or sand etc.
  • Tier: tiers are 'taxes' you pay on your land in Second Life. They are paid monthly and their amount depend on the land size.
